Heading to Talladega Superspeedway for the YellaWood 500 means plenty of excitement on track, but it’s worth brushing up on Alabama’s road rules so your trip goes smoothly.
Just like the rest of the United States, traffic in Alabama keeps to the right. If you’re more used to driving on the left, take extra care when pulling out of parking lots, entering intersections, or making U-turns near the Speedway.
Limits depend on the type of road. In residential areas, you’ll usually see 25–30 mph (40–48 km/h). State highways are typically 55–65 mph (89–105 km/h), while interstates can allow up to 70 mph (113 km/h). Watch the signs closely–police monitor speeds with radar, and fines for going too fast are costly.
Red lights are strictly enforced, with cameras in some locations. A right turn on red is allowed after a full stop, unless posted otherwise. Always yield to pedestrians, and avoid pushing through yellow lights when you can safely stop.
DUI enforcement is strict, especially on race weekends. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08% for drivers 21 and over, and zero tolerance applies to younger drivers. Random checkpoints sometimes appear near the track. If you plan on drinking, line up a designated driver, taxi, or rideshare.
Every passenger must wear a seat belt, front and back. Alabama officers can stop you just for this, so buckle up before you start rolling.
Drivers must stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and at stop signs. The first vehicle to arrive has priority. If you and another car arrive together, the driver on the right goes first. Expect heavy foot traffic around the Speedway and slow down accordingly.
If police signal you to stop, stay calm and pull over to the right in a safe spot–ideally well-lit at night. Keep your hands visible, remain polite, and wait for instructions from the officer.
